HONESTY! AN EXPENSIVE GIFT

Being honest with oneself and others is one of the best lifestyle one can live, when you are being honest, it brings you close to decent people and pushes away the naysayer, it also helps you to a certain hopefulness about the world.

Honesty refers to facet of moral character and virtuous attributes such as integrity, truthfulness and straightforwardness. It means to be trustworthy, loyal fair and sincere.

Integrity evolve from the Latin word ‘integer’ meaning whole or complete according to American Heritage Dictionary of English language.

Integrity means doing the right thing for the right reason and it is a personal choice of uncompromising and predictably consistent commitment to honor moral, ethical, spiritual and artistic values and principles.

This reminds me of an old story of two friends that one day thought of securing their future. They both went to a spiritualist seeking help. On getting to the man, they explained their ordeal. The man asked the friends to return the following day in order to make preparations in readiness for their problem.

They were so optimistic about it so the next morning the two friends came back, the old man congratulated them and brought out two transparent bottles full of corn. He then told them they have to be sincere to each other because the bottle he is going to give them is a replica of their lives and they have to guard it diligently so that the bottle will not be broke so lives will not be scattered. He said since they are friends, he’s going to give Mr. A’s life to Mr. B and vice versa.
For a very long time, things went well for the two friends and were both happy for the life they were living but it got a particular time that Mr. B began to covet Mr. A’s wife but couldn’t do anything about it and later thought to himself, after all I have Mr. A’s life in hand, if I could just break the bottle I was given, his life will be scattered and I can have whatever I wanted from him. Mr. A on the other hand was carefully keeping his friends’ life, prayed daily and kept the bottle in a parcel and in sacred place. He believed they were both going to enjoy their lives till the end.

On a faithful afternoon, Mr. B brought out the bottle of corn, went to Mr. A’s house and told him, I love your wife and am going to have her no matter what, since your entire life is my hands. All I have to do is break and scatter it all. Mr. A began to beg his friend but he won’t listen to him and broke the bottle on the wall. The whole corn scattered on the floor. Unfortunately for Mr. B, everything he had built fell apart and he finally ran mad.

A confused Mr. A ran to the spiritualist for help concerning his friend, but the man told him there was no remedy because he is reaping the fruit of dishonesty he planted and congratulated Mr. A for being honest with the life that was

given to him, he also told him that he gave them their life to handle by themselves.

The bottom line for this story is that honesty and sincerity pays, if only you choose to walk therein, you will surely reap the fruits. Honesty is a virtue one must crave for, it is a great policy.
